How I Make a Living Online While Living in Bali (Without Being an Influencer)

If someone had told me ten years ago that I'd eventually be working remotely from Bali, I probably wouldn't have believed them.

When people think about making money online, they usually picture one of two extremes.

The first is the influencer who seems to earn thousands of dollars every day while sipping coconuts on the beach.

The second is the endless stream of "passive income" videos promising you'll become rich if you buy the right course or find the perfect side hustle.

My experience has looked nothing like either of those.

I didn't build a six-figure business overnight.

I didn't go viral (except for one tiktok which kinda went viral unexpectedly).

And I certainly didn't quit my job after one month of freelancing.

Instead, I slowly built a career that gave me something I value far more than overnight success: flexibility.

Today I can work remotely, raise my son in Bali, choose my own schedule, and continue building new income streams. It wasn't fast, but it was realistic.

The biggest misconception about online income

One of the reasons so many people give up is because they expect online income to happen quickly.

In reality, most successful freelancers start with:

• small projects,

• lower rates,

• lots of applications,

• learning as they go,

• and gradually building trust.

That's exactly how I started.

You probably already have valuable skills

One thing I've noticed over the years is that people constantly underestimate the value of the skills they already have.

You don't need to become a programmer or start a million-dollar startup.

Many freelancers earn a living doing things like:

• writing,

• customer support,

• project management,

• translation,

• proofreading,

• legal assistance,

• virtual assistance,

• social media support,

• language teaching.

Often, the challenge isn't learning a completely new skill - it's realizing that someone is willing to pay for the skills you already have.

My experience with Upwork

Upwork has been my primary source of income for several years.

But I didn't start with prestigious clients or large contracts.

My first projects were small.

Over time, those projects turned into reviews.

The reviews turned into better opportunities.

Eventually, I reached Top Rated status and a 100% Job Success Score.

Looking back, consistency mattered much more than talent.

My advice to anyone starting today

If you're hoping to build an online income, I'd focus on three things:

1. Use the skills you already have.

2. Apply consistently instead of waiting until everything feels perfect.

3. Be patient. Building trust takes time.

It's not glamorous advice, but it's what actually worked for me.
