How I’ve Moved 15+ Times in 10 Years— And Still Make Every Space Feel Like Home

If there’s one thing I know well, it’s moving. In the last decade, I’ve gone from my home country of Switzerland to Denmark, London, New York City, back to London, then to three different cities in the Netherlands—and finally, I landed in Bali. And even here, I’ve lived in seven different homes so far.
You’d think I’d be tired of it. But moving so often has taught me something powerful: home isn’t a place—it’s a feeling. And creating that feeling is something you can do anywhere, with just a few intentional choices.
So here are my top tips for turning any place into a dreamy, grounded, cozy sanctuary—especially if you’re a digital nomad, an expat, or just someone who craves beauty and calm in your everyday space.
White Walls & Flowy Curtains: The Blank Canvas
Wherever I go, I always try to create a bright, airy space. That starts with clean white walls and light, flowy curtains. It instantly opens up a room and lets the light in. I treat these as my neutral base and bring in color through furniture, plants, and accessories. This gives me the freedom to change the vibe of a space with just a few items—and makes even temporary apartments feel fresh and intentional.
Less Is More: Aesthetic Peace Through Minimalism
I’ve learned the hard way: clutter makes everything feel heavier. Mentally and visually, a minimalist space is always more peaceful. When you move often, you really see what items are worth keeping. Surround yourself only with things that truly matter or serve a purpose. It’s freeing—and beautiful.
Keep a Few Sentimental Pieces
One of my secrets to making a new place feel like my place? I always travel with a few sentimental pieces—things I’ve had for years. A framed photo, a little art print, a ceramic bowl from a market in Europe… these small pieces carry memories and immediately make a space feel emotionally anchored.
Floor Cushions for Grounding & Comfort
I’m obsessed with floor furniture—especially large, comfy cushions or mattresses in natural fabrics like linen, velvet, or corduroy. Not only do they add texture and warmth, but there’s something grounding about being close to the floor. It becomes my favorite corner for reading, playing with my baby, or just stretching out and dreaming.
Mood Lighting is Everything
Lighting has a magical ability to change the mood of a room. I always bring in warm, layered lighting—table lamps, fairy lights, candles, even a salt lamp or two. Don’t rely only on overhead lights. Create corners of glow. It’s soft, welcoming, and deeply comforting after a long day.
Don’t Skip the Rug
If I had to choose just one decor item to transform a room? It’s a statement rug. Rugs anchor a space. They pull everything together and add softness and personality. I’ve used everything from jute to Moroccan-style prints, depending on the vibe I’m going for. Even a small rug makes a big difference.
The Bottom Line: No matter how many times you move—or how temporary your space feels—you can create a home that nurtures you. These simple, powerful shifts help me feel grounded, inspired, and cozy, whether I’m in a villa in Bali or a tiny apartment in Amsterdam.
Because home isn’t just where you are—it’s what you create.
